Communicators for Change (CC@MIIS) is proud to present a recording of the panel discussion Empowered Communities: The Art and Science of Building Networks, which took place on Nov 20th, 2009 at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in Monterey CA. The panel featured Rangineh Azimzadeh World Pulse board member, Colin Gallagher, Returned Peace Corps Volunteer and civic engagement professional, Joe Johnston the Founder for Social Hive (http://socialhive.org) and Technology Advisor to the Pachamama Alliance and Nina Rosete the executive director of the Dare to Dream Fund. The panel, which was moderated by Alice Paipa-Lenard, compared and contrasted the interlinked concepts of “community” and “network”, discussed the potential to use modern technologies to construct global networks of empowered communities, and showcased current initiatives to build such communities around issues of justice, development and sustainability. This panel was part of CC iConference 09: Communicating Change in a Complex World, which was sponsored by the Teaching and Learning Collaborated, the Student Council, the Center for Advice and Career Services, the Graduate School of International Policy and Management, and the Graduate School of Translation, Interpretation, and Language Education.
